Two supermassive black holes discovered together, 300 light-years away
These two supermassive black holes are rapidly engulfing the gas and dust around them, forming incredibly bright structures called Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Unlike previous pairs of black holes, the distance between these black holes is much shorter, making them even more special.
As far as we know, black holes are located about 800 million light-years away from Earth. This discovery is extremely important for understanding what is happening inside galaxies. Anna Trindade Falcão from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics describes this extraordinary discovery as follows:
“Seeing two supermassive black holes so close was not something we expected. This is a rare event in the universe and shows us that there are much bigger things inside the galaxy.” It was also stated that this discovery once again revealed the fascinating and complex structure of the universe.
